Peter Hickman IOM TT 2018 Superstock Victory

With perfect weather conditions, the 360 Superstock race set off at 14:15 this afternoon. After a week of topping the timesheets, there were high expectations of the Louth based BMW rider.

On his way into Bradden, Peter was running hot and having stepped on to the Superstock from the much lighter Supersport he was late on the brakes and had to stop the bike, turn back round oak tree and then get his head down for the run to Glen Helen. Placing him back in 10th position.

With determination, he started to eat back the seconds, and after shooting through Sulby speed trap at 188.5mph, he managed to pull himself into 3rd by Ramsey Hairpin.

It was lap two which made superstock history at the Isle of Man TT where the Smiths Racing BMW rider went on a full charge, setting sector records around the course. Pulling into the pits, he had taken the Superstock lap record, setting an astonishing 134.077 (16:53.059) just 2.7 seconds off the new outright lap record set by Dean Harrison on Saturday’s opening Superbike race.

Lap three saw an epic battle between Hickman, Dunlop, and Harrison. Swapping places for the lead across the lap, Hickman was in P3 until taking the lead back at Ramsey again.

With just 1s separating the top three riders, Peter led the way through Lap four battling hard with Dunlop all the way to Cronk y Mona. Crossing the line for his first ever Isle of Man TT win and breaking the Superstock record for a second time with 134.403 (16:50.601)

Peter jumped off the bike and was immediately surrounded by his Smiths BMW team and his family to a chorus of applause and appreciation from the paddock and grandstand.

Peter Hickman “Wow. I don’t usually get emotional. I made such a mess of the start. I Couldn’t get the bike stopped, and I was so angry with myself. That is the hardest I have ever ridden around here. Massive credit, as always to Smiths. What a team and what a bike, she rode awesome. It was brilliant. What a race. I want to thank all my sponsors for years of support. Mega!”

Peter heads straight out for Lightweight qualifying this afternoon ahead of Wednesday’s second Supersport race followed by the Lightweights.
